It's not often that residents of Los Angeles celebrate a barnraising. That's not the only reason for excitement in the community of Lake View Terrace. Less than two miles from the Rodney King incident, people of all ages and abilities are working together, enjoying the equestrian sport of vaulting, or gymnastics on horseback. Valley View Vaulters is the only organization of its kind where kids, handicapped and non-handicapped, can get close to and work with wonderful and friendly horses. On June 29, 2002, Valley View Vaulters broke ground on its dream of many years: a covered arena. "We really need this covered arena," said Rick Hawthorne, coach and co-founder of Valley View Vaulters. "In the summer, direct sun makes the temperature too severe for our seriously handicapped vaulters. In winter, the rains create standing water; even after the sun comes out, we can't use the arena for days." The quarter-million dollar project started with a $500 donation and "a million dollars worth of hope," in the words of Virginia Hawthorne, who co-manages Valley View Vaulters with her husband. "A local university graduate has agreed to create the architectural concepts," added Virginia. "We couldn't even dream about this project without the support of our local community." A variety of local officials and community groups attended the groundbreaking, along with enthusiastic vaulters. Since June, fundraising has continued in earnest -- along with the dream!
