Barrels (or "practice horses") are used for both compulsory and kur practice. The barrel simulates a horse and may be used in lieu of, or in addition to, the horses. Barrels are used to teach basics, practice difficult routines prior to moving to the horse and for additional practice time, when the horses are unavailable.

Additionally, barrels can be acquired for serious, individual vaulters, when it is impractical or impossible to own individual vaulting horses.
